How to reset your world

Your experience of living has 2 aspects:

1. Life itself

2. Your internal narrative about it

That narrative is both an asset and a liability

It depends on who is the boss

Is your mind a fabulous tool?

Or are you 'ruled' by your thoughts and associated feelings?

Lost in the past or future

Worried. Fearful. Hopeless. Powerless

The good news is that the stories your mind tells may not always be accurate

We can question them.

If they appear invalid, 'try on' some alternatives

Here's an example:

"John shouldn't smoke"

This statement is false because John smokes

Even though it is unhealthy, if I say that John shouldn't smoke, it is a lie (in my mind)

On a subtle level, I am resisting reality and I will feel this as tension

If I want peace (and this does not mean I don't stand up for what I believe in), I can try a reset

Take the statement and flip it 180

"John should smoke"

How do I know this?

Because he does

My thinking is now in sync with reality

Anytime you feel internal stress, check the story your mind is telling you

Assess it against the reality of the situation

See if you can flip it 180

How do you now feel?

Less stressful?

Tomorrow, we will take this technique and apply it to some of the more prevalent beliefs many of us share

When I was feeling confused and lost in the world I needed hope, autonomy and understanding. These daily emails are meant for that young human struggling in the challenging game of life

They should take you less than 30 seconds to read
